On January 28th the WowCondoms.com Website was attacked by a Distributed Denial of Service Attack (DDOS) which continues even today. Towerstream, our original Internet Service Provider (ISP) lost service to over 300 Boston area clients and abruptly discontinued service to WowCondoms.
We spent the weekend moving over to a new ISP, GoGrid who immediately identified the issue but could not bring service back to the WowCondoms.com site until the attack stopped.
We were contacted by an Internet Security specialist in Germany who's server was maliciously taken over and was one of many which were used to coordinate an attack using over 7 thousand Call of Duty game servers around the World against WowCondoms.com. The attack generated 10 to 15 GB/second of data which clogged up Towerstreams network and ultimately caused the shutdown.
We attempted to call Activision 3 times to put an end to this, but they still haven't returned our calls, so we contacted the authorites, our local Congressman and anyone else who might be able to put a stop to this. Fortunately, our new found friend in Germany is helping us put together a list of these 7 thousand + malicious servers to put an end to this exploit once and for all and to prevent attacks on other businesses around the globe. The exploit is well documented going back to as early as 2004 and even has a YouTube video which has been up for 2 years giving a step-by-step tutorial on how to launch an attack.
Why would someone attack us so viciously? Does it have to do with the Pope's comments on contraception? http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/01/catholic-churches-distribute-letter-opposing-obama-healthcare-rule/ :
On Jan. 19, Pope Benedict XVI told the American Roman Catholic Church they needed to understand “grave threats” posed by what he called radical secularism in politics and culture. The pontiff specifically mentioned the U.S. church struggling to be permitted conscientious objection to “intrinsically evil practices.”
We really don't know for sure, but we do know that no one will stop us from selling contracepetives to help fight deadly infectious disease and poverty. We are back up, running and fighting! Yes, we now have a condom for DDOS too.
